Unreleased Prologue and Give Me Your Opinion Contest

Unreleased Prologue, My Boyfriend Merlin, and a Contest!

Hello, everyone. So MBM has an unreleased prologue. I'm going to post it up on the blog because I'm not sure if it fits in the official version of the book.

**Update on the contest**
~The contest will be closed by tonight. I've put a rafflecopter with the entries below and will let it pick the winner. Thank you everyone who took the time to comment. I loved hearing your thoughts!~

Alright, so here is the contest: Leave me a comment saying if you like/don't like the prologue and your opinion if it adds/doesn't add to Book 1. I'll pick a random commenter (from this Blog, facebook, etc) to win a digital edition copy of 1 book in the My Merlin series (your choice of which book). I'll leave this contest open until Ever My Merlin, Book 3, is released (a week or so). Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

My Boyfriend Merlin, Book 1
Prologue
(Unknown POV)

I got there too late.

I don’t know why I came at all.

You came for her. My insidious mind laughed at me.

Blood soaked the walls. The harsh light of the sun shone down on the townhouse’s white walls. The once pristine kitchen ran with streaks of red. The red didn’t bother me. It hadn’t bothered me since I made my first kill at the age of eleven.

I walked past the boy in the school letterman jacket—the headless boy. His head tumbled off after I hacked it from his shoulders, and his youthful face, its invisible beast underneath, lay lifeless under a cheap wooden table with sunny yellow placemats.

I ran the sword against my leg. I don’t know why I bothered to clean it. Any sword I touched got dirty. This one wasn’t mine. It belonged to the dead mother and the girl on the floor. I didn’t look at the mother, another casualty in a silent war. If I’d gotten here a few minutes sooner… I clamped down the thought. It never paid to look back.

My eyes sought the girl. She looked broken; her soft golden hair splayed around her still face like a torn halo. She wasn’t, though. She was strong, surprisingly so.

The way she laughed, freely yet with a hint of yearning. The way the light caressed her profile when she stared off into space, almost as if she could sense me in the shadows.

For weeks, I watched her. I shouldn’t have after I found out she wasn’t the one I sought. She wasn’t anything special. Then why did I linger? Why did just looking at her make me want to forget every purpose and every vow? Why did I feel as if I waited over a thousand years for a chance to know her?

I gnashed my teeth. I couldn’t get distracted. My brother needed me, although he’d never admit it. I’d failed him too many times. I was a wizard and I had a destiny to bend.

I laid the sword beside her. In a small burst of magic, I melded the fabric of her torn shirt. I touched her pink lips, just one touch. A bit of blood smeared where my finger pressed, marking her. She would never even know I was here. She wasn’t mine. For a moment, though, I wanted her to be.

But then, I was selfish that way.

  1. I love this, especially with how Vane's jealousy comes up fairly often in the series. Plus, with his favoritism to the magical candidates, it's interesting to see he's drawn to Ryan so early. I like it :-)

  3. I really enjoy this prologue from his POV. It makes you relate to him and see he has another side... a softer one even though it's possessive one as well... I really like the fact that he says "My brother needed me, although he’d never admit it. I’d failed him too many times." That makes me smile and like him even more :)

I think if this was added into the book, it would add some more insight into Vane... this look back into what happened is really intriguing and I love reading this look-back and comparing it to the recollection of this event later in the book. :)

    1. Yay! I can't wait for you to read Book 3. I delved back into their history/through Matt and Vane's POV-- which can go either way-- if you like getting to know them a little deeper or if you'd rather stay with the here and now story. I wanted to get a good balance :)

  4. I Loved It! You can really tell it was Vlane that was depicted in the prologue. I also really liked that it shows that Vlane had strong feelings for Ryan before they even officialy met. I wonder what Merlin would feel about this if he knew? :)

    1. He is a contradiction! Here's one scenario I came up with--

Matt and Vane sitting on a porch having a couple of brewskies.

VANE: I want your girl, bro
MATT (puts down his beer): You would. Back off.
VANE (takes a sip of his): We’ll let her pick.
      MATT: She’ll pick me.
      VANE: Wanna bet?
MATT: No! It’s not a game.
VANE (satisfied grin): S’okay. I would rather play with her anyway.

  5. Priya, I loved the prologue and I think new readers will really like it too. It'll fit in beautifully with the rest of the book,MBM, especially at the part with Ryan's memory.
The scenario you came up with so true! I can see them going at it right now. I absolutely can't wait for the third and final book. I actually won't read anything else until I get my hands on it. Priya tell me, who does Ryan choose?!

  6. I really like seeing that scene from Vane's perspective (boy, he's addictive), and it is definitely interesting to see him attracted to Ryan before their official meeting. It gives a fresh perspective to his attitude during weapons training.

I have to agree, though, that it doesn't quite fit into the final version of the book. It was so enjoyable to see the shift in his attitude towards Ryan as they trained, and the way their relationship developed has more of an edge without it.

    Cool prologue, though.

    1. Great thoughts, Erin! Yep, I love the scene from his viewpoint but, I agree, it takes the surprise out of their encounters. I love it when people write in and say they didn't like him at all at first. It's so cool when a character changes your mind, you know.

      Thanks for sharing!

  7. I really enjoyed the prologue. I love that it gives a deeper insight into Vane and shows that he has a deeper, more caring side to him. It further solidifies my belief that he's always had feelings for Ryan.

I can't wait forthe final book. Although I must say that I will be sorry to see the series end and I have no idea who I want to see Ryan end up with.

    1. I delved deeper both into Merlin and Vane's past in Book 3. The scenes for me were intense yet so much fun to write. I'm glad who the choice is still a surprise though :) I love those moments of "Oh no, you didn't just do that!"

      Thanks for dropping by!

  8. Instantly sucked in. I like the peek at the beginnings of Vane's obsession with Ryan and the guilt he has over Merlin. Cannot wait until book 3!!

  9. I loved the prologue. It was an interesting perspective, especially since it was from Vane instead of Matt or Ryan. However, I agree with Erin O'Malley that it doesn't fit with the first book. It takes the surprise out of the scene of Ryan's hidden memory. It also tips off the reader to Vane's true feelings toward Ryan; something you have to guess at right along with Ryan. I think it might actually make a good prologue to the third book though because it makes you question why he chose becoming the Fisher King instead of her.

    I can't wait for book 3!

    1. Ha! I agree also... and I did have that thought -- I should put this in somewhere in Book 3. Alas, Book 3 already had a prologue that fit :P

      Glad you enjoyed it, though!

    1. So glad you enjoyed the series, Lia! Yes, I would say Chapter 13 and what happened with the archer are tied into this. Maybe to be explained in a later book.. Priya :)
